Nog lay flat and still in the shaft, watching the corridor outside the ventilation grille with sharp Ferengi eyes. Jake desperately wanted to ask his friend what he saw, what was out there; but his brief, whispered query elicited only a furious glare and a silent finger to lips. A moment later, a squad of invaders quick-timed down the corridor; Jake caught a brief glimpse of their shiny black armor, gray gloves and boots, mirror-black helmets over Nogs shoulder as they passed. He put his arm around Molly, making sure she stayed quiet. One invader looked directly into the ventilation shaft. The kids froze, not daring even to breathe. But if it saw anything, it did not register, the invader squad jogged on by, none raising the alarm. After a few minutes of silence, during which Jake fidgeted like a restless puppy while the Ferengi remained as still as a sleeping crocodile, Nog cautiously gestured themforward. How do we get the grate off? he asked Jake. Is it clear? Nog nodded, his huge, sensitive ears flexing slightly as he listened to sounds no human could hear. Nobody around. Got any ideas? Jake squirmed around, then suddenly lashed out with both feet, catching the grate square. It popped off its moorings with a dreadful clang, tumbled to the ground, spinning and ringing like a huge Ferengi gold coin. Nog gasped. Jake leaped out into the corridor. His friend followed; then Jake reached in and helped Molly OBrien out. Humans! said Nog, making it sound like a curse. We coming back here? Of course not. Jake picked up the grate, tossed it back into the shaft. Lets get the hell out of here. Why? asked the Ferengi. If the invaders are all deaf, dumb, and blind, well be fine right here. Jake rolled his eyes, and Nog led them stealthily down the corridor. Back in the ventilation shaft, Nog had led them to a narrow chimney dropping down four levels to level fifteen, where the connecting tunnels led from the core section to the habitat ring. He showed Jake how to press his back against one wall, feet against the opposite, and squirm slowly down the chimney. Nog had gone first, followed by Jake, with Molly riding in Jakes lap. Now Nog led them around the corridor toward tunnel two, stopping every few steps to listen. Suddenly, Nog hesitated, staring at something on the deck. It took Jake a few moments to realize what he looked at: it was a dead body. Uncle Jake, said Molly, is that man taking a nap? Shh, said Jake, dont wake him. Lets go. Taking her firmly by the hand, he led the way toward the tunnel. Nog followed, still staring back at the body. Jake refused to look back, tried to push thoughts of his mother out of his head. The body lay in a pool of blood, just like Another one. Wincing, Jake kept his eyes focused on the middle distance, led Molly around the corpse using his peripheral vision.
